The chompettes, the game's "comic relief" characters, are implied to have been the protagonist's previous victims who were bound eternally to the cabin after their deaths.Īn in-game news article states that the serial killer known as the "Butcher of Zakopane" had murdered a child, whose corpse found in a barrel of potatoes with multiple stab wounds in the stomach, identical to how the Butcher supposedly killed their previous victims, and this was the Butcher's 4th victim in less than a month.

The protagonist is strangely comfortable with cooking "meat", suggesting that they're experienced with the dish, and internally remarks that Karin is 'learning quickly' during her descent into villainy. While the protagonist's past isn't known for certain, several clues are dropped throughout the game making it clear that the protagonist has a history with the cabin the game takes place in and is experienced with murder and the consumption of human flesh.

It's possible that the protagonist was attempting to redeem themselves from their murderous, cannibalistic past during the present events of the main game, although it was of course to no avail. They were likely genuine friends with the rest of the main cast, as they seem to feel guilty about not rationing the supplies conservatively and they show remorse for Gregor after what Karin does to him. The protagonist never objects to their reprimandings, instead quietly accepting them.ĭespite this, the protagonist isn't a completely heartless monster. The ghouls of Mariah, Anatoly and Gregor describe the protagonist as a "horror", an "abomination" and a "wretch", and consider them to be evil to the point of inhumanity, a sentiment shared by the chompette Raspberry, who also enjoys chewing the protagonist out for their malevolence and makes her hatred of them crystal clear. When Karin finally turns on the protagonist and attempts to kill and eat them, they end up disarming and killing her without hesitation. During Karin's descent into villainy, the protagonist remarks that 'she's learning quickly'. The protagonist is also shown to be pessimistic, believing that the rest of the cast are in denial about Mariah's death for having hope she'll return after days away. They behave stern and assertive with their cabinmates, being pleased internally when they don't object to their decisions. The protagonist is then revealed to be cold, calculating and, of course, cannibalistic, being completely calm and comfortable while cooking "meat" (human flesh, presumably that of Mariah at the time) and stolidly serving it to their cabinmates. However, this innocent facade drops during the flood after Mariah ends up sacrificing herself in an attempt to leave the cabin and find help. The protagonist is at first shown to be polite and friendly, even cooking meals for their friends during their stay at the cabin. The protagonist's face and most of their body are never shown, although at the end of their fight against Karin, we're able to see that their arms are veiny, dark and appear to be masculine, although the protagonist's gender isn't confirmed.
